Technical Development - Design Co-Op

Position Overview Using aluminum for automotive body structures is a new technology that is growing as automakers lightweight cars to make traditional gas vehicles more efficient and strive for longer ranges and good towing capacity of electric vehicles. The Novelis CSC uses state-of-the art design tools to directly work with car companies to design and engineer parts in existing and new aluminum alloys to demonstrate the most efficient ways to use these parts. The Co-Op will be assisting and/or completing automotive design studies for the Novelis Customer Solution Center through product design, analysis, benchmarking, and testing. Depending on interest and proficiency, the Co-Op will delve into design studies of specific components or systems within automotive structures. This may involve any combination of 3D design (with CATIA), analysis with FEA tools, formability analysis, cost calculation, and testing. Typical structures are car door structures, car body structures, battery enclosures for electric vehicles, or other metallic structures common in the auto industry. Different grades will be studied to optimize designs and report solutions. Additionally, there may be specific studies on individual small components or help with gathering benchmarking information on full body structures through benchmarking studies. By completing these design studies, this work will aid in selling of Novelis materials to key automotive OEM customers and will provide valuable marketing information through BOM analysis. Complete any necessary training Work with experienced engineers to complete the project Benchmarking products and bills of materials Studying design alternatives through spreadsheet study Progressing to 3D design and/or analysis Provide test results to support study What you can expect to gain/learn from this opportunity:
Understanding of automotive design process, basic principles of automotive structural design, metallurgy, and CAD/CAE software used to complete designs Exposure to industry experts Access to state-of-the-art benchmarking databases, 3D CAD software, testing equipment, and whatever is needed to complete the project
Qualifications:
Undergraduate student of any year in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering Familiarity with CAD software, General knowledge of mechanical design Interest in automotive industry and product design Basic CAD modelling abilities is considered a plus Collaborative attitude and willingness to learn
Salary Range:
$80K -- $100K
Minimum Qualification
Software DevelopmentEstimated Salary: $20 to $28 per hour based on qualifications.
