Tech Dev Technologist III
Position Overview The Joining Technologist will be responsible for leading joining laboratory operations within the Novelis North America Customer Solution Center (CSC) in Novi, MI. This position will work closely with the core Enabling Technology area of joining as well as the Technical Development and Technical Service teams. It is expected the Joining Technologist will cover a wide range of evaluations and technical needs. This position will report to the Enabling Technology Leader who is responsible for managing the CSC Laboratory Facilities. The candidate should possess a general understanding of Novelis products and processes. As a two-way information conduit to internal teams, the Joining Technologist will perform laboratory testing of moderate to high complexity, document results and provide data and preliminary analysis that is accurate and valid. The Joining Technologist will lead laboratory projects and initiatives focused on joining area equipment of laser welding, cold metal transfer, resistance spot welding. The position will require creation of training documents and leading laboratory training sessions all with a safety-first mindset. The Joining Technologist is expected to be a key contributor to laboratory operations and must be able to independently manage day-to-day needs and address moderately complex problems. Responsibilities & Qualifications Responsibilities Complete diverse technical projects utilizing the equipment of the CSC Enabling Technology labs, especially joining equipment to realize testing needs in defined projects. This will include laser welding/cutting, spot welding, cold metal transfer and other equipment. Coordinate work from multiple customers (CSC, Technical Development and Technical Service) and clearly communicate technical information and/or results effectively to colleagues and design teams on a regular basis. Understands and is able to clearly communicate and clarify customer requirements. Maintain and diagnose critical equipment, including calibration and maintenance schedules. Provide integration and PCL support for equipment in the forming area, including 400T servo press with robotic/furnace cell and new roll forming facility with wide range of joining technologies Utilize equipment in a safe operating manner and in compliance with Novelis safety standards. Identify key lab safety points and complete risk assessments as needed. Train new lab personnel and engineers in lab as necessary. Accountable for identification and correction of hazards or unsafe practices in laboratory area Qualifications B.S. in Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering or technical degree or equivalent 5
years of hands-on laboratory/equipment operation experience, preferably in an industrial setting Deep understanding of laser operation and laser welding Experience with robot operation, programing and integration Basic understanding of sheet material joining requirements, preferable with aluminum Strong interpersonal and communication skills with ability to work well with diverse workgroups and cultures
Salary Range:
$100K -- $150K
